What Are the Safest Cities to Raise a Family?
Henderson, Nev., was the top-ranked place on the list of Safest Cities to Raise a Family.

State capitals and cities near them dominate the top of the GoodCall list

The 2016 election brought a lot of attention to the issue of safety in the nation’s biggest cities. Phrases such as “crime-ridden” and “crime-infested” made it to the main debate stage.

That raises the question: Where, oh, where can a family find an urban place that’s safe?

GoodCall® analysts looked at data from the country’s 80 largest cities, with populations greater than 250,000 and ranked the Safest Cities to Raise a Family. In addition to FBI crime data, the researchers considered vehicle safety, air quality, and how much a community values education.

Henderson, Nev., came in at No. 1 on the list, followed by Plano, Texas; Boston; Virginia Beach, Va.; and Chandler, Ariz., in the top 5.

“As families decide where to buy a home, the cities they choose can have a big impact on their future,” says Claire Etheridge, Data Analyst for GoodCall.com. “State capitals and cities near them dominated the top of the list due to their high percentage of educated residents as well as low crime and vehicle mortality rates. In addition to education and safety, a valuable health factor to find in a big city is the air quality, all important things that families consider when deciding where to live.”

Henderson had the fourth-best crime rate among the 80 cities researched: just about 20 incidents per 1,000 residents. Irvine had the lowest crime rate, followed by Plano and Chula Vista, Calif. New York City had the fifth lowest crime rate.

Henderson also had the highest air quality ranking.
