Geographic Coverage & Key Cities

The 737 area code, introduced in 2013, serves as an overlay to Austin’s original 512 area code, covering the same fast-growing region of Central Texas. This area spans seven counties, including Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Bastrop, and includes Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, San Marcos, and other thriving communities.

Area code 512 was one of the original area codes established in October 1947, initially covering a large portion of south-central Texas, including Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. Over time, as the population and telecommunications demand grew, the 512 area code was reduced in size through splits.

Most notably, in 1992, San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley were assigned area code 210, and in 1999, the southern portion was assigned area code 361. To prevent number exhaustion in the Austin area, the 737 overlay was introduced in July 2013, requiring ten-digit dialing and allowing for continued growth without requiring changes to existing numbers.
